One of my favourite creative hobbies since I was a child is cardmaking.

There are a lot of Danish books about making cards and other kinds of paper crafts that I have always enjoyed getting from the library and copying patterns from. Today I also enjoy making the more advanced 3D cards.
The card on the right was made for two little boys, one for each, when they became big brothers last year. I also made custom envelopes for them.
I love making 3D cards which is images or illustrations layered in 3 to 4, sometimes 5, layers that give the cards depth. Each layer adds the motif on top of the previous layer but some of the motive has been cut away to create the 3D effect. I simple love how it makes the motif stand out on the card and you can let it speak for itself or decorate the edges of the base card.

The cards I am showing in this post are very simple but you can of course add as much extra details as you want. I just prefer not to over do it. Just by choosing a special kind of cardboard paper as the card base can be enough to enhance the motif you have chosen. The mermaid to the left would look good on blue colored paper with a subtle shine or glimmer to it. If a white thin paper type was added just a few millimeters bigger than the mermaid, creating a border around her, it could add yet another dimension to the card.
Granted, cutting out the pieces for the 3D card can be challenging depending on how detailed you want the edges to be and how big the motif is. As you can tell from the mermaid, and the other cards below, the images can be quite detailed so if you are not experienced with a paper cutting knife or do not have sharp pointed scissors it can be difficult to cut the pieces out without damaging them.
Using scrapbook materials to make your cards or using cardmaking materials for scrapbooking is a great way of expanding your creativity.
